Banai was born in Jerusalem to the large family of Iranian Jews. He began his entertainment career during military service with the Lehakat HaNahal military band. [2 ]
Banai served in the Artillery Corps of the Israel Defense Forces during the 1982 Lebanon War. While in the military, he met guitarist Shlomi Braha, with whom he formed a band.
