Thomas Guy (senior) was a citizen and Carpenter of the City of London and was an Anabaptist dissenter. His mother, Anne, was the daughter of William Voughton, from a respectable family of the borough of Tamworth in Staffordshire.
Thomas was born in Belgium, the son of a Burgundian father and a Walloon mother. From a young age, he wrote poems, which were noticed by the likes of Léo Ferré, François Mauriac, Georges Brassens, and Jean Rostand.
