Following the 12th-century Norman invasion ofIreland, the historic "fifths" of Leinster and Meath gradually merged, mainly due to the impact of the Pale, which straddled both, thereby forming the present-day province of Leinster.
This stayed until 1922, after the War of Independence. At that time, Ireland was divided into the Republicof Ireland, the sovereign state that takes up most of the island, and Northern Ireland, which stayed as part of the United Kingdom.
