James Holman FRS (15 October 1786 – 29 July 1857), known as the "Blind Traveller," was a British adventurer, author and social observer, best known for his writings on his extensive travels.
Holman participated in the Texan Revolution, and fought in the Siege of Bexar. In 1836, the Allen brothers—Augustus Chapman and John Kirby— hired Holman as a real estate agent for the paper town of Houston.

For Holman it was the raw intensity of such experiences that kept depression at bay: he travelled in order to regain the sensation of feeling fully alive.
