John Polkinghorne was an English physicist and priest who publicly championed the reconciliation of science and religion. Polkinghorne was raised in a quietly devout Church of England family.

Polkinghorne resigned his position as Professor of Mathematical Physics at the University of Cambridge in 1979 to pursue theological studies, becoming a priest in 1982.
Polkinghorne took up his vocation as a priest in the middle of his life after playing a role in the discovery of the quark, the smallest elementary particle of matter.
