Juan RodríguezCabrillo (Portuguese: João Rodrigues Cabrilho; c. 1497 [1 ] – January 3, 1543) was a Portuguese maritime explorer best known for investigations of the west coast of North America, undertaken on behalf of the Spanish Empire.
Juan RodríguezCabrillo was a soldier and explorer in the service of Spain, chiefly known as the discoverer of California. Virtually nothing definitive is known of Cabrillo’s early life.
Several historians of Cabrillo hailed the find as a major historical breakthrough. Robert Munson, historian at the Cabrillo National Monument, said “This could be the smoking gun that proves where Cabrillo was born.”
Believed to have been of Portuguese descent, Juan RodríguezCabrillo was a soldier and explorer in service to Spain. He is best known for his explorations of the coast of California from 1542-43.
