The club was formed on 25 January 1890, making it Spain's oldest sporting club solely devoted to football. [6 ] [7 ] [8 ] The Scottish-born Edward Farquharson Johnston was one of Sevilla's founders, also becoming their first president.
The club's stadium, the Estadio Municipal Butarque, was built in 1998, after moving from the Luis Rodríguez de Miguel, a stadium they had played in since 1966.
