The narrow win over the Ottoman Empire in the Great Siege of 1565 proved that it would take a concerted effort to keep the strategic stronghold of Malta from falling into enemy hands. Built by the Knights of St. John, led by Jean Parisot de Valette, the foundation stone of Valletta was laid in 1566 by de Valette himself.
